Puntland Midwives Of Assoication

Background

Puntland Association of Midwives (PAM) was established 31 Oct 2013 by a group of Somali midwives to respond to the increasing demand of qualifies midwife workforce in Puntland. Puntland Association of Midwives(PAM) is registered as a member of the international confederation of midwives, (ICM).

Reproductive health indicators in Somalia are among the worst in the world with maternal mortality rates estimated to be 1400/100 000live births. This, in conjunction with a high total fertility rate of 6.4, translates into a lifetime risk of death during labor of one in ten mothers. Perinatal death rate is also high at 81/1000 live births. The high maternal mortality is mainly a result of a major lack of access to quality Sexual and Reproductive health (SRH) services (skilled attendance and EmONC) coupled with social, cultural and health seeking behavior practices that are highly unfavorable for SRH Working in this context, Puntland Association of Midwives (PAM) collaborates with the Ministry of Health in various health related matters and all issues concerning midwifery as a professional practice to enhance changes by providing competent midwifery skills that improve maternal and infant health.
